NC Teach@NC State
NC TEACH is a 3-semester Residency Licensure teacher education program. Entering students must have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject area (or 24 credit hours completed in the subject area they want to teach) and a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.70. The program is designed to train, support, and retain mid-career professionals as they become licensed teachers in North Carolina.
Candidates must be employed as a full time teacher in order to begin this program.
NC TEACH classes meet online and one Saturday per month. This affordable program is part-time and consists of 6 education classes completed in 3 semesters. NC TEACH can be started in either Spring or Summer. There is no Fall start.
This program may lead to Professional Licensure.
What is a Residency Program?
A Residency Program is an alternative licensure opportunity for emergency teachers. According to the NC Department of Public Instruction, a teacher may be hired as a full time classroom teacher if they have an undergraduate degree and a 2.70 GPA. The teacher must then affiliate with an Approved Educator Preparation Program (EPP), such as NC TEACH at NC State, to obtain the Residency license. The Residency teacher completes the Residency program, which includes coursework and licensure exams, while teaching. At the completion of the program, the EPP recommends the teacher for a full teaching license (this is called ‘clearing’ the license).
Application Process
Complete the online application (opens in new tab).
The application will require:
- Electronic copies of official academic transcripts (undergraduate, postbac., and graduate).
- $75 non-refundable application fee
- Two references
- If applicable: Copies of Praxis II scores, TOEFL scores, and/or your Emergency license or hiring contract.
Additional Considerations:
- Applications cannot be reviewed until all materials are received. If any items are missing, it will delay the review process and admissions.
- Because of the high volume of inquiries during the application periods, the NC TEACH staff cannot evaluate transcripts without an application. Please use the resources available to determine your eligibility.
- Candidates may be asked to interview with the NC TEACH or College of Education faculty.
- Applications may be deferred up to one semester. After one semester, candidates must resubmit an application to NC TEACH.
- For information on which Praxis test to take, please review the NC State Praxis II North Carolina Licensure Exam Requirements.
- In addition to the NC State Praxis II PDF, students should also refer to the Praxis website to double check and/or see if there is an exam they wish to register for that is not listed on the document.
- Once candidates are accepted into the NC TEACH program, they must apply to the Non-degree Studies office (NDS) to obtain their student account information. The NDS office conducts criminal background checks that may prevent candidates from taking courses at NC State. The NDS office is also where candidates officially report residency status for tuition purposes.
International Students also need the following:
- If your degree is from outside the United States, a TOEFL score of 80 (with a score of 18 on Listening, 18 on Reading, 18 on Writing, and 18 on Speaking).
- A transcript evaluation (course-by-course) by an international review agencies.
- Please note that students with a J or F visa are not permitted to take classes in the program because of the restrictions on the Distance Education host site location.
Plan of Study
An NC TEACH Plan of Study is a list of courses that need to be completed in order to be recommended for licensure. It lists the required NC TEACH courses, the required content courses, the Praxis II exam, and the edTPA. We use your undergraduate transcripts to fill in the content courses when you apply to the program. We check off other needed courses as you take them. It also has a section with your required Praxis II exam listed and the edTPA.
