English as a Second Language Add-on

Entrance Exam: Not Required
College of Humanities and Social Sciences

The NC State Online English as a Second Language (ESL) Add-on Licensure Program is intended for licensed North Carolina teachers and for those who are pursuing teacher licensure through an approved degree program at NC State.

Our online education option provides formal training in the areas of applied linguistics, second language acquisition, language and culture, literacy, ESL instruction, assessment, and professionalism. Not only do participants acquire the necessary knowledge and skill sets to better serve English language learners, but they are also prepared for the English Speakers of Other Languages Praxis exam, a state requirement for ESL add-on licensure.

The program consists of three content courses and a practicum in TESOL (12 credits total).  Candidates must maintain a C average in each of the four courses to remain in good academic standing. The Online ESL Add-on Licensure Program reflects the standards for ESL language teachers approved by the North Carolina Board of Education.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold a current initial or continuing North Carolina Teaching License.

With their application, students must submit:

  • A personal statement of professional goals.
  • A copy of their current initial or continuing license in another field.

Career Prospects

ESL teachers work in a wide variety of environments, from elementary, middle, and secondary schools. Some community organizations such as nonprofits that serve Latino populations also need ESL teachers. Examples of employment opportunities outside of typical school settings include juvenile interventions organizations and migrant education programs.
