The Master of Forest Biomaterials emphasizes both technical and management skills and is designed for working professionals who seek career advancement. Professionals can also pick and choose courses, as a non-degree student, that will especially benefit their immediate projects and career goals.

NOTE: Non-degree students must apply for the Master of Forest Biomaterials before starting a third course, in order for the first two courses to be credited towards the master's degree.

Eligibility

Individuals with a bachelor’s degree in a related area such as chemistry, material science, biology, textiles, wood products or chemical engineering may apply to the master’s program. Professionals in the wood, paper and allied industries who seek advanced study, but are not interested in pursuing a career in research, are also eligible.

Applicants must submit:

• Final transcript of baccalaureate program
• Letters of reference
• Resume
• A clear and concise statement of interest

International applicants, regardless of citizenship, must demonstrate proficiency in English in order to be eligible for admission to the Graduate School.

Applicants not meeting the requirements for full admission may be granted provisional admission.

Plan of Study

The master’s degree requires 30 or 36 credit hours; a thesis is not required. For students with one or more years of relevant industrial experience, 30 credit hours are required for the degree. For students with no employment experience related to the field of study, 36 credit hours are required. Students may also want to consider courses from Industrial Engineering or Textile Chemistry, and should consult with an advisor about a plan of study.

Career Prospects

The Master of Forest Biomaterials (MFB) program is designed to address the needs of professionals employed in the paper and allied industries. Allied industries include but are not limited to chemical and equipment suppliers for the paper industry.

Students in the Master of Forest Biomaterials degree program often maintain their current jobs while pursuing this degree. As employees, students apply the knowledge they gain to their current position, thus enhancing their value as employees as they earn the credentials required for career advancement.

The average starting salary for process engineers in the pulp and paper industry is one of the highest among all engineering disciplines in 2020 (students with a baccalaureate or more advanced degree).
