How to Apply to the Youth, Family, and Community Sciences Online Master’s Program
Step 1: Apply to the online Master’s Program
The Graduate School oversees the application process for each program. The Graduate School has its own criteria for admission.
Requirements for admission include:
- Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in a related area or must have credit for 3 to 6 hours of prerequisites.
- Minimum 3.0 GPA 4-year accredited college/university
- 3 Letters of recommendation (at least 1 academic, 2 professional)
- 500-800 word academic writing sample that answers the following prompt: What is the role of family science in a diverse society?
- Personal Statement
- Official Transcripts from 4-year accredited college/university
Transfer credits are generally not allowed. Exceptions made at the discretion of the Director of Graduate Programs (DGP).

You can check the status (opens in new tab) of your application at any time. International students must include complete transcripts, a degree statement and TOEFL or IELTS scores. Applicants should have a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
Step 2: Register for Classes
Once admitted, you will receive an NC State student ID, password, and username, which you will use to register for courses. You will receive an email from the Director of Graduate Programs that identifies your advisor. You should schedule a phone conference before registering for courses.
Visit the YFCS Online Courses webpage to peruse course descriptions. Should you have any questions or need assistance with determining your course workload, contact your advisor. If you have other questions, you can contact the Director of Graduate Programs, Dr. Annie Hardison-Moody.
Step 3: Pay Your Tuition
You may visit Distance Education Tuition and Fees to complete the tuition payment process. All inquiries regarding payments and cost of tuition should be directed to the cashier’s office.
This early enrollment will generate a tuition bill, which must be paid by its due date in order to hold the seat. Closer to the start of the Fall semester, we will send you more information about NC State’s Wolfware course management system for accessing course content.
Coursework
Not ready to enroll in the degree program yet? You can still take classes! Classes taken independent of a certificate or degree program may be used to satisfy continuing education requirements or, if approved, be applied toward a certificate or degree program in the future.
